Skill Assessment Requirements for Chefs & Cooks
Chefs
Chefs (ANZSCO 351311) can pursue Permanent Residency (PR) in Australia through skilled migration visas (e.g., Subclass 189, 190, 491). Requirements include:
- Advanced Diploma in Hospitality + Certificate III & IV in Commercial Cookery
- 3+ years of supervisory experience as a chef, plus 4 years as a cook (or 6 years total without apprenticeship)
- Positive skills assessment by TRA or VETASSESS, evaluating cooking skills, kitchen operations, and food safety
- English proficiency, age under 45, and 65+ immigration points
Cooks
Cooks (ANZSCO 351411) are limited to temporary TSS visas (Subclass 482) with no direct PR pathway. Requirements include:
- Certificate III & IV in Commercial Cookery or 3 years of full-time training/employment
- 3 years of experience as an apprentice or equivalent
- TRA skills assessment with documented evidence
Note: Both roles exclude fast food, takeaway, or limited-service establishments.
